Race Condition Vulnerability in ERC20 Approve Function
The approve function in the standard ERC20 token implementation is susceptible to a race condition vulnerability. This issue arises when a token owner decides to change an existing allowance for a spender from one non-zero value to another in a single approve transaction. An attacker, upon seeing this transaction in the mempool, can front-run it by quickly submitting a transferFrom call to spend the original allowance. If the attacker's transaction is processed first, they can successfully spend the old allowance, and once the owner's new approve transaction is mined, they are granted the new allowance as well. This allows the spender to effectively withdraw more tokens than the owner intended, leading to a potential loss of funds.
